Description
On March 2, 1942, P-40s of the First and Second Pursuit Squadrons attack Japanese Air Force base at Chiang Mai Airfield in Thailand. In a daring dawn raid they destroyed 15 Japanese planes. Wingman Bill McGarry, his Tomahawk damaged by anti aircraft fire, bails out over the jungle into enemy territory. Vice Squadron Leader Ed Rector makes carrier passes over the tree tops, spots “Black Mac” in a clearing, and drops him a Hershey bar and a map marking his location. McGarry was captured and tortured by the enemy until Chennault arranged to have him spirited away by the Thai resistance forces. He was returned to Chennault’s command.
